For the Washington Running Report
Sean Graham almost backed out. In the week leading up to today’s George Washington Parkway Classic, the 32-year-old Pacers athlete missed three days of training due to illness. By Friday, Graham was feeling better. By Saturday, elite athlete coordinator Jordan Zwick was urging him to give it a shot.
[button-red url=”http://www.swimbikerunphoto.com” target=”_self” position=”left”] Photos [/button-red]Good thing Graham took Zwick’s advice. Near the 7-mile mark, Graham took the lead and proceeded to put 61 seconds on runner-up Eddie Jones, 35, of Boise, ID. He won Pacers Event’s annual 10-mile race in 51:03.
Running his first race in the DC area, Jones was impressed. “I started pulling away and he just came out of nowhere,” he said of Graham at the finish in Old Town Alexandria.
Graham moved to Arlington from Oregon three years ago. Both he and Jones have sub 14-minute 5K speed and are relatively new to the 10-mile race distance.
Runners were greeted at the start in Mount Vernon with overcast skies, a cool temperature, and an off-and-on drizzle. For the first hour or so, rain was not much of a factor. And even though the rolling point-to-point course on the George Washington Parkway featured a fairly steady headwind, runners mostly praised the conditions.
“It was not too hot, not too cold, pretty much perfect for 10 miles,” Graham said.
Matthew Barresi, 29, of Falls Church was third in 52:18. Jordan McDougal, 24, and Charlie Ban, 29, of McLean ran 52:52 and 53:24, respectively, rounding out the race’s contest for top Americans. Ethiopia’s Seife Geletu broke up the contingent with a time of 52:41, good for 4th overall.
Geletu lives in Washington, DC with fellow Ethiopian and course record-holder Demesse Tefera, who in 2007 posted 47:30. (The women’s course record-holder is Tatiana Chulakh of Russia, who the same year clocked 55:39.)
Derik Thomas, 46, of Alexandria was top master in 57:33.
“There was a headwind,” Thomas said. “It was steady. Once you got to mile 8, you were exposed to it. It hit hard.”
Thomas, however, had the benefit of a pack to work with – five guys working together, running in a line – that carried him through a negative-split effort, he said.
Thomas’s wife, Lisa Thomas, was second in 1:00:25, bested only by Ethiopia’s Tiringo Getachew Shiferaw.
“The weather was hard,” said Shiferaw, who was pleased to get the win in 58:50.
Thomas, 36, competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in January but has nonetheless maintained a steady spring racing schedule. This was her best finish at the GW Parkway Classic yet.
“It usually takes something like this … to get me concentrated for the summer and fall,” said Thomas.
Laura O’Hara, 32, of Alexandria was third in 1:01:04. Michaela Courtney of Arlington (1:02:24), Kerry Allen of DC (1:02:39), and Jenny FitzGerald (1:02:55) of Woodbridge, VA rounded out the top 5 Americans. Samantha Kirby Cole, 43, of Arlington was top master and 9th overall in 1:04:48.
With more than 8,000 runners registered, the 10-miler had nearly 5,000 finishers and the 5K had more than 800.
For Andrea Ricketts, 28, of Alexandria, who wore a Boston Marathon shirt, today’s 10-mile race gave her confidence that recent injury troubles are behind her, she said. Ricketts finished in 1:12:33 and is plotting a return to Hopkinton.
From the finish chute, runners had just a short walk to the post-race celebration in Oronoco Bay Park.
Before heading there, Greg Gonzalez, 41, sporting the T-shirt from his first race –
October’s Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon – took a second or two to catch his breath.
Gonzalez’ friend and coach, Noah Simon, 36, of Arlington, a runner of 15 years, was congratulating him for running a huge “PR,” except Gonzalez had no idea what the term meant.
“I don’t know what that means … Oh, personal best,” he said.
As it happens, Gonzalez had entered the GW Parkway Classic, his second race, with the simple goal of averaging faster than the 8:28 pace he had averaged in October. But, pushed by Simon, Gonzalez gutted out 1:16:44, nearly a minute-per-mile faster than that.
Just a year ago, the lawyer discovered that running helped him solve problems he was having with his back.

“At this time last year,” Gonzalez admitted, “there was no way I could envision ever running a 10-mile race.”

For the Washington Running Report
The Hogettes helped out in the fun run. They also noted that a race about hope would fit in nicely with the Washington Redskins.
This the third iteration of the Ringing in Hope races that began last New Year’s Eve. It was followed by an early summer rendition started just down the road. After having a 3K to accompany the main event 10K last year, the races moved to a more logical 5K-10K format.
This year the two races started together with the 5K racing one loop in reverse of last year and finding new ground. For the 10K which was run as an out and back prior, the course offered two loops with slight adjustment. In the final quarter mile of the 5K the 10K split off to circumnavigate the shopping center and surrounding neighborhood, while the 5K raced around the final two corners of the plaza to cross the ChronoTrack mats.
This made things easier than having 10K runners cross the mats twice. And as there were nearly 2,000 runners with the 1K fun run included, it was easier to score. Many of the participants chose to walk the 5K. Often with two distances runners decide to change their race afterwards and it does make scoring a little harder to do.
The really fast runners easily lapped the walkers and many of the 5K runners. A curious phenomenon of racing is that often slower runners make a brilliant burst of speed at the very end leaving one to wonder why it took them so long to finish. On the other hand the truly gifted artisans will ease up when they have verily achieved their victory.
Joshua Hardin, 20, of Sterling, VA started about seven seconds late but bolted past the leaders early. He coasted in the file half mile to win easily in 33:32. He trotted across the line in what one scorer called a “ten minute pace” and at first was thought to be a mid pack 5K finisher. He may have needed to slow to get past the multitude of 5K finishers as he was alone among the 10K runners. Doubters need only see his 32:23 overall win at the Leesburg 10K last August ahead of Seife Geletu who earned 23rd place in the Elite division of the Fall Runner Rankings. Aaron Church set the standard last year in 32:14 as well as winning the summer version in 33:02.
Jonathan Phillips, 19, was the runner-up in 34:49 and then three submasters battled for the third spot. Brian Szabos, 38, took command in the end with a pure 6:00 pace and 37:18 finish.
For the women, the standard was a very solid 30:24 in the summer by Sarah Bard and Anna Bernal had been tops a full year ago in 39:45. Today Melissa Saunders, 19, ran away from three ladies more than twice her age. Her nifty 41:00 even had her as the fifteenth 10K finisher of the day. Lisa Chilcote (left) has been a busy bee racing all around the region this year but usually just over the official border. In the fall she settled a bright colored flower at the Veterans Day 10K in 40:04 to earn the fifth masters spot in the rankings. It also made her the favorite today but not by much. Cathy Ross, 41, had run a very solid Richmond Half Marathon. Mandana Mortazavi, 48, had been used to ruling the Loudoun County races. These three did not begin to sort out until the second half of the race. Chilcote was runner-up in 41:39 on a reasonably flat course with a few deceptively tough hills. Ross was just a little way behind in 42:24 with Mortazavi cruising in with 43:05.
Ryan Hughes, 15, (left) battled three other runners for the 5K honors. His 17:08 is the second fastest time behind Axel Tarnvik, 18, who ran a 16:41 in the summer. Indeed the next 8 runners all bested the second fastest time of the summer. Last winter in the 3K only one runner beat 49-year-old Ted Poulos and his 10:55 and that was Tarnvik who ran 10:27.
Poulos, now 50, was sixth overall in 19:03 easily the top master as he enters his full first month as a grand master. For the year Poulos has run 170 races, just his tenth best yearly total. During one five- year stretch in the last decade he ran 1235 of his nearly 5000 career races. It has been many years since he has not had fifty overall wins in a year. This year his total is 64.
Just has in the summer the top three women included a record, with Amy Passeuer, 22, running 20:22 to reset the standard set by Karen Haddon in the summer, a teen with Jillian Stoddard, also faster than the old standard in 20:34, and a masters finisher. Cheryl Young, 42, just nipped Kathy Hoenig’s summer crown of 21:20 with a crown making 21:18.
For the seasoned runners, Alan Rider, 75, jovially promised a victory in the 10K. Then he had to run for his life to head off James Chapman for the title 57:14 to 57:38. Margaret Collie, 67 was the oldest female finisher, winning her division.
In the 5K Maynard Weyers, 75, (right) generally has his way and dominated in 27:45. Most likely Rider was a few strides behind him when they split directions at the 5K finish.
For the ladies, Lee Glassco, 80, was the beneficiary of expanded age groups of 80 & older for another victory. If you build the division, they will come. Barbara Potzick, 71, was lured out of racing retirement to give it a go. This was only her second event in five years. She predicted about forty minutes, and even running “easily to avoid injury” she finished in a marvelous 36:27. Now she is thinking about another race to earn a coveted spot in the Washington Running Report Winter Runner Rankings, which end the day before the 2012 St.Patrick’s Race in March.

For the Washington Running Report
It only took the Jingle All the Way 10K six years to outgrow its out-and-back course in Washington, DC’s West Potomac Park. This year, with more than 6,000 registered runners, Capital Running Company moved the race downtown to the same venue that hosts its annual St. Patrick’s Day 8K. The new 8K, which starts on Pennsylvania Avenue and, as with Occupy DC, is staged at Freedom Plaza, was held in cold, yet calm conditions that probably seemed perfect to those who braved last year’s cold drizzle.
If you are wondering how a road race typically held on a frigid day has become such a popular race, look no further than the costumes. At the Jingle All the Way 8K, Santa got the top-seeded number and knee-high candy cane socks paired with elf caps were the opposite of an exception. Today’s oddballs were ever-serious front-runners wearing their usual racing kits.
On the other hand, Claire Hallissey, who won today’s race in 29:18 while sporting candy cane socks, antlers, and the race’s complimentary bells in the laces of her racing flats, is only seriously fast.
Hallissey also sported a pink stripe of KT tape on her leg to aid an aching knee that has lately limited her training. Injuries have bothered the 28-year-old Arlington resident and England native all year. And while they did not stop her from running 2:29:27 in October at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon – the time put her 6th overall and made her eligible to run for England in the 2012 Olympics – it has yet to fully heal from the effort.
Treating today’s race like a tempo run, Hallissey ran purely for enjoyment and to give her knee a bit of a test. She won last year’s Jingle All the Way 10K in 35:17.
If all goes according to Hallissey’s hopes, England’s third and final selection for the Olympic Marathon will be her. In the meantime, a good Christmas-themed costume helped her maintain a low-key race day. “It keeps me from going crazy out there,” she said.
Barb Fallon Wallace, 38, of Alexandria was second in 29:50. Nikeya Green, 29, of Centreville, VA was third in 30:21. The top master, Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA, was fifth overall in 30:52.
Shortly before the 9:00 a.m. start time, race organizers announced that the Metropolitan Police Department had requested a 10 to 15 minute delay. At 9:22, runners cheered when it was announced that the race would start in two minutes.
The delay did not seem to affect Michael Banks, 25, of Washington, DC Early on, the men’s distance coach at Georgetown University ran smoothly with a front pack that included Temesgen Ilanso, 24, of Silver Spring, Brian Flynn, 28, of Bridgewater, VA, Seife Geletu, 29, of Washington, DC, and Esmetu Tilahun, 31, of Washington, DC.
After coasting through 3 miles in around 15:30, Banks gradually picked up the pace, accelerating ahead of Ilanso on the final turn to win by 8 seconds in 24:45. The former all-American at Georgetown focused on triathlons after graduating in 2009. Recently his focus has shifted back to running.
Flynn was third in 25:02. The top master, Kevin Lynch of Chantilly, VA, ran 29:32.
There were plenty of other ways to take home a prize. All it took to be eligible for a random prize – a heart rate monitor, say – was to submit your race number into a random drawing.
Of the 64 teams entered in the team competition, names ranged from the winning Georgetown University Running Club, which took top honors, to Egg Kissers and Grandma Got Run Over … By Us. Georgetown’s co-ed squad averaged 30:22, topping Capital Area Runners’ 13-member average of 31:10.
At the post-race ceremony at Freedom Plaza, some Jingle All the Way teams – some official, some not official – learned that the competition for Best Costume was as tough as any other.
While standing in line for pictures with Santa, Daphne Kiplinger, 26, and David Shepard, 34, both of Washington, DC, and Dave Steadman – all wearing some sort of red and green, Christmas-themed getup – explained that they had tried to put a team together but their friends had bailed at the last moment. As for the stylish green, holly leaf-style sunglasses that made her outfit pop, Kiplinger said she got those in her Christmas stocking last year.
If you have ever wondered what it is like to run in a Santa suit, let Mike McNiff, 23, of Fairfax tell you: “It was a little hot,” he said. His Santa’s Run Deer team included his sister Katie McNiff plus Tiona Bland, Amanda Hamilton, and Kelly Jamieson. The women wore antlers picked up from a dollar store and wrote their deer names on pieces of paper they taped to their backs. Rather than stay around for the best costume content, the group headed off for brunch.
The team who won for best costume did not mention a team name. They did, however, mention a captain: Libby Wile, 29, of Washington, DC. Their group included Ashley Schambach, Amy Levine, Ellen Taverna, and Katie Robbins. Present among them were a present, a nutcracker, and a dreidel.
Moments before all runners dispersed, two toy soldiers (Terri Crutchman and Ginger Kopecky, both of Woodbridge) posed for a photograph with as many Christmas trees (Jessica Connelly and Abigail Op, both of Washington, DC.)
“We wanted something to run in that would look festive for the holidays,” Crutchman said. “What better than toy soldiers to wake us up and run?”
For Connelly and Op, though, costumes are becoming the norm. Op, who has run marathons, recently roped her friend into running her first race on Thanksgiving. For that, they dressed as Pilgrims. For the Hot Chocolate 15K, they went with a 1980s theme.

For Washington Running Report
Like Sleepy Hollow, the Great Falls section along Georgetown Pike is a pretty well kept secret. Not that many races get held there. The ones that do have names like Difficult Run, named after one of the many parks along the roadside. You really do [button-red url=”http://www.joecassellafoundation.org/about-us.php” target=”_self” position=”left”] More About Joe [/button-red]have to slow down to transverse this section of town with its winding turns and steep hills but the view is great.
Last year in the inaugural year the skies opened up a drenched the field. Everybody proclaimed the course a challenge. “So you are going to Great Falls. Expect a really hilly course.” We did and it wasn’t. Great Falls Village went all out. The police cordoned off all the roads. The rumored shortage of parking was just that – rumor. One veteran runner was told to prepare for a tough finish and ran too timidly in the first half only to learn that there were virtually no hills on the course.
The entire course was lined with more cones than you could shake a stick at. No chance of getting lost.
The scores of kids returning from the mile fun run were all laughter and smiles, probably because they knew what the 5K racers would find out soon enough, the course was actually fast. A pack of three flew away recklessly up the opening rise. The first time anybody knew something was up was about a half mile into the race when we heard a couple of squeals as two young runners went down. Then turning the corner we discovered the course was going cross-country. The country already soaked from last night’s rain was a steep down hill in the mud. That only lasted for fifty meters and after another hundred meters of flat on the grass runners were on the road again. Just before the 2K sign runners returned along the path, making the course technically a cross country race.
Cresting the hill there was a chance to see runners taking on the down hill, which was distinctly tougher than the uphill. The rest of the way the race tilted up and down a tad but barely past flat with the steepest down hill section the final tenth of a mile.
As late as two miles the pack was still three with Birhanu Feysa, 29, of Silver Spring, MD leading the way. The other two were straining some and third place Seife Geletu, 29, of Washington, DC (left) fell off the pace to finish in 16:22. That was still well ahead of Edi Turco’s event record from last year at 16:46. Turco, 38, a fine submaster, could not stay with the lead pack. Today he did well to hold off Vinnie Derocco 17:25 to 17:35. Derocco came in from San Diego to take a shot at the 30-39 age group medal. Ryan Foster, 25, was runner-up and earned $100 for a nifty 15:51. Feysa stayed golden to set the new standard with 15:47 and take home $200.
Before the race, runners noted that there were a lot of fast women runners. Fast is the technical term for runners that spend lots of times running warm-ups in front of the starting line. Last year champion Mijiko Phelps of Reston, VA(below). She won in a runaway 19:59, ahead of Gina Cassella’s 21:30. This year it was evident early that she was running for second place. At forty, her time of 20:20 was impressive. Keneni Orgesa, at 39, was one of only two runners in the top eight younger than 40. She pulled away easily winning it all in 19:18. Fourth place Anita Freres, 46, was third master in 21:49. That was well off her normal pace. Her husband noted that she had finished fourth yesterday at the We’ve Got Your Back 5K in 21:05. She started slower than normal, possibly a victim of hilly hearsay heresy.
Perhaps the biggest story of the women’s race was 56-year-old Heather Sanders. From McLean she must have known the course. She ran a very nice 23:34 for the top grandmaster spot. She had the second best age graded time behind Orgesa for the women and edged out all of the men from Turco on back.
Ted Baca, 65, is back after taking some time off from racing. He definitely started too conservative, thinking hills, but still had a very nice 23:44.
After the race there were so many pastries, muffins, fruit, and beverages (hot and cold) to choose from. With four massage tables and music playing in the lovely courtyard it was so nice the rain held off to allow runners to linger. At the finish line of the race, friends and family of Joe Cassella lined up to congratulate runners with high fives as they crossed the ChronoTrack mats.

For the Washington Running Report
As Michael Wardian was finishing his preparations he had a big grin on his face. He noted that he had just won a 10K but the race was “almost too short.” This year would be his fifth time racing the 20K and he had won the last three years. There were three other submasters in the elite field. Frenchman Philippe Rolly who back in 1999 had won the St. Patrick’s Day 10K in 30:27, well ahead of Wardian’s 30:55 PR. Rolly had dappled in Wardian’s forté winning a fifty miler in 2008 in just over seven hours. Wardian had won the JFK 50 Miler in 2007 in 5:50:34.
Italian Edi Turco loves to run. He told us at the DCRRC Landon Cross Country Saturday night that he looks for a race every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Like Michael he runs fifty plus races a year. Often onlookers wonder if these guys would not be faster with fewer races. Perhaps Wardian might improve on his 14:55 PR, which does seem a little out of touch with his new marathon PR of 2:17:49 set this year. And of course he always maintains, “I love to toe the line.”
Third in that group of mega runners is Karsten Brown of Front Royal. About ten years ago, he was just getting started and trying to quit his clove cigarettes. Now he runs a hundred miles a week and will race close to a thousand miles this year. After falling in one 50K in July he bounced back on August 6 to run fifth overall at the Dahlgren Heritage Rail Trail 50K. The next day he took on the Dog Days Cross Country 8K. Still, more than 75 races already this year and a really busy week of racing, he was not feeling to optimistic about a victory.
Tall and slender with his cap on backwards Wardian stayed right with the 10K leaders as the masses roared down Harrison Street. The next three miles plus are all up hill and the wheat, which was a little soggy from the morning’s rain, would soon get separated from the chaff. Jared Abuya, 34, of Gainesville, VA had the best of the race coming up the final hill alone in a 1:05:50 for the second fastest time ever on the course. Aaron Church set the record in 2006 with 1:04:29. The next runner was Wilson Komen of Washington, DC. The lanky Komen has run sub thirty for a 10K and been ranked number one in the Washington Running Report Running Rankings. Though he loves to run, lately he had not been racing as much. His 1:06:19, the third fastest time for the event, proved he still has his stuff. Wardian floated in next in 1:08:10. It will probably mean he will have to go and find another long race to run. He has scheduled the North Face Endurance Challenge Kansas City 50K on August 27.
The next two runners ran close together and almost did not seem aware they were in a battle. Neither surged, and Matt Logan bested Oberst Enzian by five seconds in 1:10:36 to round out the top five. The top master was hard charging Derik Thomas who always seems to finish near the top. At 45, his 6:02 pace on a very muggy day was marvelous. As Rolly crested the hill in 1:13:45 he did not seem to be aware that Edi Turco was coming up behind him in 1:13:57. But the savvy racers always know where their competition is. Brown rolled in just behind Thomas in 1:15:17 and at least at that point it looked as if he might be considering a day off. By Tuesday we expect to see him back out running the Paul Thurston 4.5 miler at Burke Lake.
For the women, Elena Orlova eschewed the 20K in favor of the 10K. That would have been a battle royale. Orlova had set the submaster record in 2009 in 1:17:34 while finishing second overall, followed by Meghan Ridgley. Last year on the short course (12 miles), Orlova won it all at an identical pace with Lisa Thomas of Vienna, VA less than a minute behind. This year Thomas was being pushed ever so close to the record. Ridgley was again third overall with a very nice 1:19:21. The battle for the gold was not decided until the final meters as Lindsay Wilkins, also of Vienna, clung on tenaciously. Thomas touched down in 1:17:40 with Wilkins five seconds behind. Erin Swain out dueled Sarah Bard for the fourth spot 1:20:35 to 1:20:47.
The 20K event is in its 8th year. This year the two races combined for the second largest crowd behind the perfect weather 2008 event which produced 137 ranked runner times, which is 10% of the field. Normally the course is very hot and the bright sun can whittle down the runners. This year the weekend was wet. The early morning rain cooled the air but left it drenched. There were no new records set in the 10K. In the 20K there were two. Grandmaster DeeDee Loughran, 53, finished ninth overall knocking 35 seconds off her record set in 2008. Right behind her Lanie Smith, 19, of Reston, VA (left) set the new teen standard with 1:26:55 and that was with a 30 second late start.
The 10K race is similar to the fabled Greasey Gooney 10k, the first 5K plus is a winding uphill that gets steeper as you go. When you turn around all but the final hundred meters is downhill ride to the finish. Even the four mile marker was eager to get to the finish line. It ended up about a quarter mile closer to the finish line by the time runners caught up with it. While that made for an awful long fourth mile split, mile five was really, really fast. For those hurrying back to the front of the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant at the finish line, there were no worries. The crew that supports the food and drink know their work. For nearly ten years, they have made a science of producing lots of great snacks and plenty of cold drinks. One runner looked at all the iced drinks and said, “They all have sugar in them.” Yes!!
The race always brings out the elite racers and especially the durable ones. Charging down past mile four the race was not yet decided. Lucinda Smith, 29, of Darnestown, MD had a slim lead but Julia Webb easily had Smith in her sights. They were racing with the top men as well, Smith winning in 37:23. That was one spot behind masters winner John Zimmerman’s 37:18. Webb came in soon after as sixteenth overall in 37:33. Speaking of masters, top ranked master and today’s race director Ray Pugsley said of Elena Orlova’s race, “Once you reach, forty everyone is aware of age.” Peggy Yetman, 43, of Leesburg, VA is nearly back to full form and held off Orlova for third place in 38:15. Orlova, 41, finished in 38:24, the same pace she ran the last two years in the 20K. Melissa Rittenhouse, 35, was next among the seven runners who qualified for the open division of the Runner Rankings.
For the men, everyone said that the winner looked like a kid. Joshua Hardin is a junior at William and Mary. Last year he struggled on the hot and hilly Cascades course in 36:47, finishing second among the five teens in the top six. The year before he was Rookie of the Year, breaking 31 minutes twice with a 30:37 10K best as a freshman. Today, he blasted ahead a prerace favorite Seife Geletu to a crushing 32:23 victory. Geletu’s worse race of the summer had been a 16:04 Run through History 5K overall win. He had won his age group at the prestigious Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 25:28. His runner-up finish in 33:18 had some runners eyeing their Garmins. Kevin Shirk was third with a solid 33:44. Top teen Patrick Spahn had run the Twilight 8K in 26:47 (34:01 10K equivalent). At Leesburg, he mustered a 35:47 for sixth overall.
Ronnie Wong and Jim Noone both belong to the 50 Plus Club. Wong turns 65 in September and won his division in 44:57. Noone, 67, easily won his division in 45:45. For the even older, jovial Leesburg resident Terry McCarthy, 76, bested mega racer Bob Gurtler, 76. Gurtler projects to again finish with more than fifty 5Ks and 100 races in a year. Of the 11 men older than 70 in the race, Dixon Hemphill, 86, is the oldest by a decade. Hemphill is still the race director for the popular Goblin Gallop 5K, which is run of the Let Freedom Run 5k course in the fall.
With all the food and drink after the race, some runners were hoping for some beer to fill the classy commemorative pint glasses each runner received in their packet. The race course has changed a few times over the years but after 23 years, the race is still a summer classic.
