In the months leading up to 2015’s Fall marathons, RunWashington will follow several local runners as they prepare for their races. We’ll chart their progress as they train their legs, lungs and minds for the challenges they’ll race on race day. Each week, we’ll catch up with our runners and see how they’re doing. First up is Burtonsville, Md.’s William Etti.
Calling William Etti’s return to running a comeback is just the beginning.
He first saw runners doing track workouts when he was in the fifth grade, and was intrigued. “I tried it,” he said, “and I sucked.”
Etti came back to track in high school, and as a freshman, admits some of the girls beat him in early workouts, but he strove to improve.
Running year-round at Parkdale high school helped him get below the 5:00 mark for the mile, though Etti admits that he burnt out after years of training seven days a week, doing two-a-days, tying tires and parachutes to his waist. He competed in the 4×400, 4×800, mile and two-mile during indoor and outdoor track, plus cross country, running with summer teams and training on his own mornings and weekends. He ran at University of Maryland briefly, but, after finding it difficult to balance the demands of school and social life, he stopped running.
Life, without running, went on. After a field trip to National Institutes of Health in high school, he realized “there are all sorts of ways to help people without being a doctor.” After what felt like 100 applications, he volunteered to work for free to gain experience, went back to school to get a masters, and continues to work where he set his sights back in high school today. He started a family.
Will kept working out, hitting the gym and lifting weights, but he was pretty sure he’d never run again.
Then, in 2009, Will was rear-ended by a drunk driver, rendered unable to walk or even speak without pain. His doctor warned him of lifting weights due to lower vertebrae damage, and in the ensuing path of recovery, doing physical therapy to come back to a new normal, Will packed on some pounds – carrying 217 pounds on his 5”7’ frame. His doctor recommended he focus on cardiovascular health when he was well enough to run again, since his previous lifting regimen would aggravate the injuries to his vertebrae.
In 2012, he started running with a fun run group in Silver Spring. It was unstructured, with a mix of different paces. More than anything, it was fun. He began to enjoy the camaraderie. Even when he’s out on the trails by himself, he enjoys the fellowship of runners, high-fiving strangers on the trails, gleaning inspiration from their miles.
The road back from the accident and its aftermath made Etti “a lot more appreciative” of being able to simply run. Winning and being the fastest are not his goals. He originally joined the Montgomery Country Road Runners with the idea that he might do a 5k or two. At the time, it seemed to be the right distance for him.
“I would never do a marathon,” he said of his early plans. “Why would you put yourself through that?”
Well, the 5k was a gateway race. One that led to a 10k, then a 10k to a half, and eventually he signed up for the First Time Marathoners program and the 2014 Marine Corps Marathon.
When asked how Marine Corps went, he laughs and said, “sometimes you learn more from your failures than from your mistakes.”
He went out fast, sticking with the 4:45 pace group, but got hit with cramping at mile 16 that he never recovered from. He ended up walking significant portions of the remainder of the course, but in that span made the effort to experience the marathon – the spectators, the other runners, the stories on the course. Even in pain, he was able to find inspiration around him.
He’s signed up for the Baltimore Marathon this year, because as a lifelong Marylander (and Ravens fan), he says he wants to support his home state. But, Marine Corps falls on his birthday this year, so he’s signed up for that, too. A week apart, he’s not planning on doing both.
Coach Conroy Zien said that, due to previous race times, Etti was placed in the 9:40 pace group, but that Will has moved himself back to the 11:30 group. Zien was surprised at the seemingly drastic drop back, but considered it indicative of Will’s overall approach. That fits in nicely with the First Time Marathoners approach. “He enjoys running, and he buys into our philosophy – he’s not looking to set any records for speed,” Zien said.
Zien also comments on the energy that Etti brings to the group. Zien notices that Etti is an inspiration to the other runners who participate. That’s at the core of what keeps Etti out on the trails, whether solo or with his pace group – he says that he gains inspiration from other runners and that he hopes that he in turn provides the same to them.
Etti notices that his sons have taken in the idea of persistence by observing him doing his training runs, working through injury, and making it through his first marathon even though it didn’t go as planned. He had a bout with IT band syndrome last season that took a lot of foam rolling and some limping races to come back from. After seeing him hobble through the Rock ‘n’ Roll D.C. Half Marathon, his sons asked him why he did it. He sat down with them and they watched You Tube videos of people running, including athletes with prosthetics, and told them that the important thing wasn’t to win, it was to try.
“Running doesn’t mean that you have it all or you’re perfect, just that you push yourself,” he said in summation to his sons. “You can always challenge yourself.”
Etti’s hope is that by just running, he can add value to other people’s lives. He’s been known to high five strangers on the trails on his regular runs, and offer encouragement to his fellow runners in training. “I meet so many people through running. Even when I just see other people out on the trails it inspires me, just the love of running,” he said.
He says he’ll be happy just to finish without injury, but he also has in mind that a sub 5:00 hour finish is within reach. He’s working on using different fuel to prevent cramping, including a camel pack full of coconut water on his long runs and various types of Gu and other fuel. Zien thinks Etti has the chance to see a great improvement over last year’s marathon, but shares the primary goal for him of finishing without injury.
The Montgomery County Road Runners Club won the masters women’s team title at the Boston Marathon Monday. Chrissy Graham, Cindy Conant and Lisa Reichmann combined to run 9:24:55, well ahead of RunningSkirts’ 9:33:27. The Washington Running Club finished seventh in the masters women’s race in 10:16:48 and the Potomac River Running team ran 1-:19:15 for ninth place.
MCRRC’s masters men’s team finished eighth with a 8:35:03 total.
Michael Wardian‘s 2:27:20 (Va.) and Sam Roecker‘s 2:53:52 (D.C.) led local finishers with 52nd and 66th overall finishes. Representing other jurisdictions in the D.C. area, Blake Whitney was D.C.’s first male finisher and Jatin Narang was Maryland’s, while Kara Waters was once again Virginia’s first female finisher and Chrissy Graham, of the triumphant MCRRC team, was Maryland’s first. A total of 669 registered D.C.-area runners finished the race.

People watch the Olympics and get inspired to try a new sport, or to work out a little harder at things they already do. Some even have a fleeting memory of past glory and say, yeah, if only I hadn’t quit my sport early, if only I had worked harder, I could have done that.
Not a lot of people say: I’m going for it.
Even fewer shave 36 minutes off their marathon PR in five years and actually qualify to run with the most elite marathon field in their country at the Olympic Trials. Teal Burrell did. On Dec. 7, 2014, at the California International Marathon in Sacramento, she finished in 2:42:13, a 10-minute PR and a qualifying time for the trials by a handy cushion of 47 seconds.
Going by her recent times, Teal (named for the duck, not the color: her parents were hippies, her father an ornithologist) would appear to be among the elite. These are the runners, it seems, of superhuman sinew, who are finishing while people in the last corral are still waiting for a porta-pottie.
[button-red url=”http://www.milestothetrials.com/” target=”_self” position=”left”] Teal’s blog[/button-red]Teal is an elite runner, but she started out as one of those mere mortals, a member of the middle of the pack, chugging along the streets of Charlottesville in a cotton t-shirt, finishing her first marathon in 2005 in 4:07. She was still a college student, and that “beer and burritofueled” marathon was going to be her last.
Until it wasn’t. A few years later, she started back up, with an idea that she would qualify for Boston (3:40 at the time). She thought lowering her time that much would take a while, and kept preparing family and friends, and herself, for setbacks. On her first try, though, she qualified for Boston by 11 minutes.
From there, the goals she set for herself became progressively more challenging, but she continued to doggedly chip away at them in sometimes agonizingly slow increments. Though she ran in high school, Teal claims that she didn’t have any real competitive drive then; even today, her only real sense of competition is with herself.
“I’m not someone who will just run if I’m not working towards a goal,” she said. “I guess I’m just really competitive with myself. … I have an amazing support system, no one’s telling me ‘You’re not going to make the trials,’ because I don’t have jerky friends.”
What keeps Teal fighting is the part of her that says she can’t, a voice she constantly strives to silence.
Teal has been climbing the ladder towards the Olympic Trials since her first Boston Marathon in 2009. Living and training in Boston at the time, that’s when she became obsessed with the running lifestyle, when running really absorbed her. She first set her sights on breaking three hours, a feat she accomplished in 2011 partly due to the pacing efforts of her brother, Blake Connor, whom she enjoys an encouraging rivalry with (Blake is the reigning 10-mile family champion, a title that she mentions came in a post-marathon race that only he was really training for).
The concept Teal uses to describe her progression from a recreational marathoner to an Olympic Trials qualifier is “chiseling,” and it’s such a perfect description. Because what runner hasn’t felt, at some point, as futile as a rock hammer against a mountain, and in the same year, month or breath, hasn’t seen a line of muscle or a log week and thought – is this the same person who once said, “I’ll never be that fast?”
Teal’s secret to the next great achievement is setting small goals between the big ones. She knew she wasn’t going to get to the trials from one race to the next, or in one season, that it was going to be important to keep moving forward, keep challenging herself, and keep bouncing back.
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Teal has had plenty of races where her performance didn’t meet her goals, where her times didn’t match up to all the hard work she had put into her training. Her teammates say that she channels that disappointment into working that much harder for the next time.
She likens it to her years in the lab as a scientist. You try experiments over and over and it’s incredibly frustrating and they don’t go as planned, but you just keep trying. Running, to her, can be similar – you keep expecting something to work and many days it just doesn’t.
In 2013, Teal suffered a hip injury, the first time she had really been hurt. She came back cautiously, after using physical therapy to learn that some of her stretching techniques needed some tweaking. She also added yoga and foam rolling to her routine after her comeback.
In June of 2012, Teal joined the Georgetown Running Club. She said the improvement she’s seen from track workouts, the accountability, the support and caliber of her teammates and the positive encouragement of coach Jerry Alexander have been the high points of running with a group. The biggest thing, she said, is “having another voice, when you have a bad day or a bad race, another person there that knows what he’s talking about” and can override the internal voice that tells her she’s not good enough.
Alexander has seen Teal’s improvement since joining the team most dramatically in track workouts. Not having run competitively in college, Teal was uncomfortable, nervous, and lacked confidence. But she knew that she needed to do the work on the track to reach her goal, so she kept at it.
He thinks that the team atmosphere helped Teal work towards her goal because it gives her an added incentive to show up and suit up after setbacks. He thinks the other women on the squad helped reinforce one of the toughest truths of running, which is that sometimes you put in all the work, have a perfect day, a great plan, and it’s just not your day. He noted, as an example, Teal’s performance in Boston in 2014, when she was primed to break 2:50 with a great training cycle and finished in 2:58.
After that, the message Teal heard from her coach and the other women on the team was that a bad race doesn’t make you a bad runner. She would be ready when her day did come, and come it did.
Alexander framed her Sacramento performance as an upset victory of willfulness over hesitation.
“Teal is an example of setting a goal and going after it,” he said. “On paper, she had no business running that fast, but she was 100 percent focused on doing it. She put in the work, and on the day it was meant to be she took advantage, and it was an incredible accomplishment: the kind of performance that galvanizes a team and humbles a community.”
While Teal has certainly benefited from the energy and camaraderie of the other women on the team, they draw equal if not greater inspiration from her.
Teammate Kerry Allen goes to Teal for advice on marathon training, and plans to emulate her incremental mileage increase and the long run strategy Teal used that had her working up to 16 miles at marathon pace effort.
Kerry joined GRC shortly after Teal, and has found inspiration watching a teammate achieve a goal she, too, has set for herself.
“She’s a testament to the importance of believing in yourself,” Allen said.
Teammate Julie Tarallo was at the California International Marathon with Teal and crossed the finish line shortly after her achievement.
“She had put a lot into this race,” Tarallo said, and for Teal to reach her goal “says volumes about how tough and gutsy she is.”
In the same conversation she also talked about Teal’s patience. That’s the difference between people who only dream big and those who achieve big dreams. Logging the thousands of small steps in between, and being ready to go all out when the dream is within reach.
If you’re stuck in the mid-winter motivation lull, or have given up for the umpteenth time on your stupid, too-big-to-dare-dream-of goal, then Teal’s blog, MilestotheTrials.com is required reading. If you find yourself dialing back your goals for the race season, or diminishing what you think you’re capable of in the long term, know that, in five years, Teal Burrell set and achieved the goal to do what only around 200 women in the United States in each Olympic cycle will achieve.
Next time you’re talking yourself into giving up, read her post on the day she qualified, and try to keep telling yourself to never give up. Chances are, you’ll end up daring yourself, Teal Burrell-style, to “Dream Big.”
As important as discipline and determination can be when training for distance running, the trait that was most valuable to a lot of racers at Runners Marathon of Reston was adaptability.
[button-red url=”http://www.amazingracetiming.com/events/2015/runners-marathon-of-reston” target=”_self” position=”left”] Results [/button-red]Chris Compson adapted when, after 24 miles of just trying to improve on his personal best time, he found himself in a position to win the race, after his best finish to date being ninth place at the Toronto Marathon. He was on spring break from his job teaching English and coaching track at Pittsford-Mendon High School near Rochester, N.Y. and his 2:50:35 finishing time was agonizingly close to a PR.
“I was just training to maintain my pace,” he said of the move into the lead. “In my quality of runner, I’m not making the big moves like Olympians, not making any surges.”
But there he was, able to carry his 18-month daughter across the finish line, at which point she claimed his medal, because after all, she finished in front of him.
Adaptations helped out other runners, too, when 21 marathoners saw their plans change twice when their original race, Greenbelt, Md.’s George Washington’s Birthday Marathon, was postponed and then cancelled in February because of cold weather and then heavy snow. The Reston Runners welcomed those racers onto the course as a kind of independent subsidiary of the club’s marquee event. The man Compson passed, James Downey, was one such race refugee, who went on to win the Washington’s Birthday Marathon (in exile) in 2:54:14.
The situation was becoming familiar to Annapolis’ Mitch Keiler.
“Picture somebody carefully paintbrushing their marathon training, step-by-step, heading into an April target race,” he said. “All of a sudden, your races are all cancelled, and when they reschedule them, they’re all back-to-back.”
He was left with the rescheduled Seneca Creek Trail 50k in Maryland (originally earlier in March) seven days before the rescheduled GW’s Birthday Marathon/Runners Marathon, which was the same day as the B&A Trail Marathon in Annapolis, which he was also planning to race. He did the 50k and saw the hilly Reston course as an improvement. He still volunteered for the B&A packet pickup, though he couldn’t race.
He’s now off to the Athens Marathon, in Ohio, which itself has seen course changes due to construction and river flooding in the years Keiler, an Ohio University alumnus, has raced near his alma mater.
“I got time on my feet and tried out at different race,” he said. “It would have been easier to roll out of bed and drive 20 minutes to the B&A starting line, but I had a good time.”
Emma Johnston, from Alexandria, was another GW refugee, and she ended up being the first woman across the finish line in 3:24:58, ahead of Runners Marathon winner Kimberli O’Connell.
Johnston tired to race the rescheduled GW Marathon, along with four other runners, by her count, but the race was cancelled at 17 miles when heavy snow and wind picked up.
Though Reston’s 30 degrees was warmer than GW’s weather, Johnston, like many runners, decked out in all black, in hopes of capturing as many rays of sun to help her warm up, though the weather was a marked improvement from 2014’s rain, sleet, hail and snow. A chest cold scuttled Johnston’s plans to chase a 2:55 finishing time, but she felt fortunate to keep her lead up.
She ran most of the race alone, but she was ready for that, having trained alone. The volunteers, she said, helped keep her on track, and she remarked that given the size of the race, she was surprised how many course marshals she came across for roughly 155 marathoners and nearly 300 half marathoners.
For Reston champion O’Connell, from Frederick, her entry was predicated on trying other races besides Marine Corps and Baltimore. Like Johnston, she’s a solitary runner, hitting a lot of 4 a.m. headlamp training runs. Here, a line of traffic cones gave her more of a buffer from cars than she typically enjoys during training runs.
“I wanted to see what I was capable of, how strong I could be,” she said. “This was a good test. There are some hills here, but I have a great sense of accomplishment.”
Ben Adams, of Arlington, ran the race to get some time on his legs in preparation for his native Pittsburgh Marathon, where he hopes to run under 3:25. He’s been putting in some hard training pushing his son, decked out in a tiny track suit, in a jogging stroller, but worries the W&OD might not be his best choice for training.
“When I race hills these days, they get me,” he said. “I think I’m getting weak not running them enough.”
History repeated itself for Patrick Moulton at 2015’s Rock ‘n’ Roll D.C. Marathon.
The Providence, R.I. native earned a first-place finish with a time of 2:32:54. He also finished first (2:21:17) in 2009 when the race was then called the Suntrust National and Half Marathon.
[button-red url=” http://running.competitor.com/cgiresults?eId=54&eiId=227″ target=”_self” position=”left”] Results [/button-red]“It’s been a while, so it’s nice to come back,” the 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier said. “The biggest challenges today were the elements. There was the cold rain. I just tried to finish as strong as I could and took it mile after mile. I caught [second-place finisher] Mynor Lopez (2:34:25) around mile 23 or 24 and I actually felt great coming in. The finish is awesome because you see the [Robert F. Kennedy Memorial] stadium and it’s a nice backdrop. That’s really cool.”
Lopez, who lives in Guatemala, decided to run his first Rock ‘n’ Roll race to qualify for a future race in Canada. It didn’t hurt that his cousin, Danny Lopez, also lives in the area.
“It is a very nice race and it is very organized. The weather just did not cooperate very well,” Mynor Lopez said, through his cousin Danny who served as his translator.
While Lopez, 31, didn’t get time he needed to qualify for his race in Canada, he said he will compete again in next year’s race.
The Moulton-Lopez battle wasn’t the only one to occur in the course’s final miles.
Rebecca Bader (2:55:53) and Martha Nelson (2:55:36) remained on each other’s heels through the course’s final stretch as they neared the finish line. Bader, who finished as runner-up in last year’s race, held a slim lead as she sprinted toward the inflatable arch near course’s end. And like last year, she also saw her lead dwindle in the race’s final moments.
When asked if she plans to give it another try next year, Bader, who lives in Syracuse, N.Y., laughed.
“I thought this time would be the time, but it happens in racing. I came in second place last year, too. You just never know,” Bader, 37, said.
This year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, half marathon and 5k drew more than 25,000 entrants from around the world. Early morning rain and 40-degree temperatures greeted participants upon arrival and remained throughout the duration of the race. Event staff provided runners with ponchos, but they offered little protection from the elements.
Participants in the half marathon didn’t have to endure the weather’s wrath for as long.
American University’s Carlos Jamieson (1:07:43) edged Andrew Brodeur (1:08:50) to finish first among men’s runners in the half, and mere seconds separated Hirut Beyene Guangul (1:15:54) from Rachel Schneider (1:16:24).
Saturday’s half marathon was a first for Brodeur, who is a fixture at local races.
“I really didn’t know how to pace myself for the first part of it,” Brodeur, 24, said. “But at about five or six miles I had [third-place half finisher] Kevin Hoyt (1:08:54) around and he had a real good idea of what his pace should be. I just kind of tried to stick with him the whole rest of the race. Probably at the last 200 meters we started sprinting… we actually thought the blue blowup [arch] was the finish, but it wasn’t. We had an extra 150 meters after that.”
Marcello Simoes, 25, made the five-hour drive from his home in Fairfield, Conn., to Washington, D.C., to run in his first Rock ‘n’ Roll half.
“I heard about it through the Boston Marathon so I decided to run it with my girlfriend,” he said. “We got into town yesterday and we’re heading back up tomorrow. “The weather is terrible. It was very cold, but I think we’re going to do it again.”
Despite the weather, a multitude of fans still traveled to Southeast D.C. to cheer on marathoners.
Potomac Runners and D.C. Triathlon Club member Becky Hirselj (2:08:06) has participated in the yearly event since it was called the Suntrust National and Half. Hirselj said the amount of fan support was impressive.
“I would have guessed that everyone would have stayed home,” Hirselj, 41, who ran the half, said. “No pun intended, but it didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits. There were a lot of people out cheering in costumes. It was great. I would have had a hard time getting out of bed. I was pleasantly surprised.”
Saturday’s marathon marked the 100th for Fairfax, Va., resident Joe Harris (2:27:00). Former Congressman Jim Ryun (R-Kan.), who won a silver medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games in the mile, presented Harris with a plaque to commemorate the milestone.
Harris, a Vietnam veteran, said his inspiration to run long-distance races came from an unlikely source.
“In November of 2004 I got a phone call from my company commander in Vietnam who I hadn’t spoken to in about 30 years. He found my name and he gave me call and said ‘there’s a half marathon out here in Arizona in January. Let’s run it together,’” Harris, 65, said. “I did, and it was a Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon. It was my first ever half.”
Harris has run 85 half marathons and 15 full marathons. He’s even convinced others to join him.
“I have a special group of friends and we call ourselves the Rock ‘n’ Roll gypsies. We travel all over the country and we see each other at different events,” he said. They’re just the greatest group of people in the world and they’ve stayed with me, they’ve run with me and they’ve pushed me on when I’ve gotten tired. Just having them with me gives me so much motivation. And that’s what running is really all about–being with friends.”
Harris doesn’t plan to slow down now that he’s reached the century mark. In fact, he and the Rock ‘n’ Roll gypsies will soon head to East Texas. “I have Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas next week, and then San Francisco. This year I have at least 12,” he said.
Some Run Washington featured marathoners had great days Sunday at the Marine Corps Marathon, but many missed personal time goals fighting strong headwinds and battling sinus issues. Still, each said they loved the experience of seeing the crowds and crossing the finish line.
See below to check on how each runner fared.
Jenn Pellegrino
Jenn Pellegrino had a 26.2 mile birthday party at Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon.
“I had a sign on my back that said celebrating my 30th birthday,” she said. “All along the course people were wishing me a happy birthday. It felt like a big birthday party, can’t think of a better way to celebrate that next decade.”
Pellegrino finished the race in about 4:40 and said she “had a blast.” She’s run three marathons in the past month, so went out with the intention to take it easy and just enjoy the atmosphere.
“The Marine Corps is so special, I never try to push it,” she said.
Though she has nothing on the calender officially until the Big Sur Marathon in April, she said she’ll likely sign up for a couple other marathons before the end of the year.
“That’s to be determined, but I usually don’t go more than a few weeks without running a race,” she said.
Breanna Gawrys
Breanna Gawrys was disappointed with her race time, but enjoyed the atmosphere on the course, with crowd support and inspirational reminders of those who had died in war.
“Overall it wasn’t quite what I wanted as far as time, but it started off really great for the first 10 miles. I was staying with 3:25 pace group, but I think I went out a little too aggressively. I didn’t feel too great after the half,” she said.
While she thought having more free time to train would leave her better prepared than last year’s race, she ended up finishing in 3:45, slower than her previous year’s time.
“I felt more ready, but I hadn’t really done fast long run training. I did my long runs at comfortable pace, and one night of speed work a week. I think I need to do a little bit more tempo,” she said.
She ran in a Team Red, White and Blue t-shirt and said the crowd support from members of the military made it so she couldn’t give up, even when she struggled in the second half. One of her favorite parts of the course was the Blue Mile on Hains Point, where pictures of fallen service members line the race course.
“It’s very inspiring and very touching,” she said. “Another thing that was really cool too was people racing with and pushing handicapped children and blind guys running, it’s very cool.”
She said she’ll definitely be back at the Marine Corps Marathon in 2015. In between, she’s already signed up for the Rock ‘n Roll half, but is trying to switch to the full marathon to have another shot at qualifying for Boston.
Kelly Swain
Kelly Swain finished the race in 3:00:55 – less than a minute off her goal of breaking three hours in her first marathon.
Despite that, she said she gave the race her all and is happy with her performance.
“I would say I definitely gave everything I had, left everything out there. I’m really happy about my time and my overall place,” she said.
She said she struggled a bit around mile 17, but got a second wind through mile 22. The last two miles, with little crowd support along the highway, were “definitely rough.”
She said she faced a lot of ups and downs throughout the race – both emotionally and physically – and while no second marathon is on her calender right now, her coach encouraged her to sign up for a flatter race, she said.
On most of the course, however, Swain said she was surprised by how many people came out to cheer on runners. Some of her favorite parts of the course were just after Rock Creek Park and around the Capitol where throngs of people lined the race course.
“Usually I wouldn’t think with such a big race or such a long race there’d be so many people, but there were people everywhere, which was amazing,” she said.
With the marathon behind her, Swain can focus on her next big event: her wedding on Friday. With only a few small logistical things to take care of before then, Swain said she plans to spend most of the week just recovering.
Jon Deitchman
Jon Deitchman loved the crowd support in his first Marine Corps Marathon. His favorite parts of the course were just after Hains Point, when spectators started lining the course again, and through the festival in Crystal City.
“With the festival they had going on, it was a really fun atmosphere. By that point, you know you’re so close it’s just beating your head,” he said.
Deitchman had hoped to break four hours, but ended up finishing in about 4:35. He said started off running with friends and had a hard time moving up around other runners at the beginning. While he may have missed his goal time, he said he was ecstatic just to have the experience of crossing the finish line.
“Everything from the opening ceremonies, it was just a blast and running was fantastic. It was a beautiful day,” he said. “I didn’t go as fast as I wanted to, but that just means next time I’ll have to do a little better. But overall, the experience in itself and just finishing was all your could really want to do.”
He said he hopes to be back out at the race next year to reach his goal time.
Jonathan Ferguson
Jonathan Ferguson finished Sunday’s marathon in 2:58, blaming his missed goal of 2:50 on recovering from a cold and a strong headwind both heading over the 14th Street Bridge and heading toward the finish line.
“It was not exactly as I’d hoped,” he said. “I was holding up pretty good until I got to mile 20, then I really started to fall apart around there.”
He said his cold has made him miss a few days of training this week and he still didn’t feel 100 percent well for the race.
A highlight was getting to run with a few of his former team mates from the University of Maryland.
“We sort of missed each other at the start, but when we passed each other through Rock Creek Park, it was very fun to see them,” he said.
Anthony Garofano
Anthony Garofano finished in 4:47, missing his goal to finish under four hours. He too was fighting off a cold and taking cold medicine, so said he was overall “pretty satisfied” with his performance in his first marathon.
“The good news is I set a PR, which is easy when it’s your first marathon. The bad news is I got beat by a man in a Stay Puft Marshmallow costume.”
He was reluctant to say whether he’s planning to tackle a second marathon, saying that he’s been told to wait a week to make that decision.
“It was certainly painful, but it felt good to finish,” he said.
He said his newborn daughter, Helen, was out on the course, including just before the finish line.
“My wife brought her out and I saw them a couple times, including just before that final hill up to Marine Corps war memorial,” he said.
While many loved the scenic course, crowd support, and near perfect weather, runners at Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon universally raved about one thing: Marine volunteers who motivated them to cross the finish line.
“The Marines are amazing,” said Addie Thompson, a 24-year-old D.C. resident. “It’s really cool to see them supporting on the sidelines and everyone is so kind at this race, I’ve never experienced a race crew that was just to kind and helpful and supportive.”
[button-red url=”http://www.marinemarathon.com/Results/MCM_Results.htm” target=”_self” position=”left”] Results [/button-red]Thompson, who finished in under four hours, works out with November Project D.C., a group that promotes free fitness with workouts – including running the Lincoln monument stairs – all before the sun comes up. She credits her training with the group, and support from fellow group members along the course, for the improvement over her 2013 time at the race.
“I personally had a much better race,” she said. “Honestly NP has done so much for my training and the crowd, people were just planted all over and incredibly supportive. We have a really tight crew.”
Megan Clark, 34, also really thrived on the energy from those on the sidelines, saying the support from the crowd is what helped her hit her time goal at her first marathon.
“It was good, it was tough, but I think it went really well. It felt good on energy from the people,” she said. “Wonderful crowd support.”
The D.C. resident had hoped to finish in under 3:45, and ended up crossing the finish line in 3:42. While many spoke about the beautiful course passing by historic monuments, Clark said her favorite part of the course was getting Dunkin Donuts munchkins at mile 24.
While her first race was a success, Clark wasn’t sure if there’ll be another 26.2 in her future immediately after finishing.
“It’s too soon to ask. Everybody says wait until later today. Right now everything hurts.”
Whittney Hollingsworth, 50, struggled with hills at the start, saying that while she expected some hills, she wasn’t prepared enough for elevation changes at the beginning.
“I hurt from the beginning,” she said. “It wasn’t the time I was shooting for, but there was no disappointment in the time at all. I was just glad to get to that finish line.”
The 7-time marathoner from Elkmont, Ala., had a three-marathon bucket list: the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon. With Sunday’s finish, she finally has completed all three and said each exceeded her expectations. Her family, who waited for her at the finish line, said the Marine Corps was the best for spectators, and Hollingsworth commented on the helpful volunteers, saying that “the Marines were wonderful.”
Paula Dubovoy, 23, broke four hours at her second marathon, where she ran for World Vision, a nonprofit that raises money to build wells for those who may not have access to clean water.
“What I love about them is they motivate people here to stay in shape and to achieve something that someone may think they would never be able to do but then there’s a greater purpose behind it as well,” the Westborough, Mass.-resident said.
Her favorite part of the course was the Marine volunteers at water stops and along the course cheering her on, while she could thank them for their service as well.
“It was just really neat seeing all the Marines and them cheering for us and thanking us and then being able to thank them as well. It’s just a cool thing, they’re thanking us and we’re thanking them,” she said.
Darjush Boushehri expected a mediocre performance, as his marathon training took a back seat to his final semester finishing up his J.D. at George Washington University. Despite that, the 33-year-old Greenbelt resident was happy with his performance at his second Marine Corps Marathon.
“My training had gone really downhill with grad school for the last month and a half, so I just decided I would stick with one of the pacing groups, 3:25. It was a hope and a dream and I came in at 3:26. That is my personal best by 22 minutes on this course,” he said. “So surprisingly well.”
He first ran the race in 2011 and came back because of the great organization and scenic course that winds by the Kennedy Center, one of his favorite parts of the course.
“It’s extremely well put together,” he said. “It’s great how it’s fairly flat overall. It has a little bit of hills to give you a little change, and seeing all the monuments of course.”
Boushehri ran Sunday for Teens Run D.C., a running group that pairs inner city kids who are interested in running any race distance with an adult mentor.
“It helps to keep them accountable, keep them in shape and give them something else to do,” he said.
He doesn’t any other races coming up before he graduates in December, but is working toward the Shamrock Whale Challenge in March, where he plans to run a 5 miler and a marathon on consecutive days, and will compete at Ironman Cozumel later in 2015.
Amid the museums that line the National Mall, Spc. Samuel Kosgei and Capt. Meghan Curran carved out their place in history when they both took leads in the Marine Corps Marathon that they would hold to the finish. Along the way, they both led their respective U.S. Army teams to military marathon team championships.

Getachew Asfaw and Colleen Little tried to run away with the race. Little faded after the half and six women were within 70 seconds at mile 17. Curran passed Little in mile 18 but soon found herself facing a daunting 20th and 21st miles crossing the 14th Street Bridge into Crystal City. Little went on to finish in 27th in 3:10:13.
But help arrived, she said. “A group of Marine Corps team runners told me to tuck in with them and they helped me get over the bridge,” where winds out of the north were starting to wreck havoc with the last segment of many runners’ races.
“The last few miles were really hard, because it was new it me, it was windy, but knowing I was on a team helped me push myself,” she said. “I was just taking it one mile at a timer after 20.”
She grew up in Chelmsford, Mass. And ran cross country and track at West Point, but said she has, comparatively, taken her running in a more recreational perspective as she’s settled into her job as a field artillery officer at Fort Dix in Moorestown, N.J. At 28, she, in a way, sprinted to her first marathon. After running the Army Ten-Miler two weeks prior, she caught the eye of Lt. Col. Liam Collins, the All-Army team captain, who had a few places on the roster to fill at Marine Corps. Collins ran 2:40:50.
“I knew she was a great runner, but I didn’t know she wanted to do a marathon,” he said. “Once I learned that, it was an easy decision to put her on the team. I told her the key thing was to be patient early on, don’t run too hard on the first 10 miles. There’s plenty of time to catch people when they fall apart.”
“I had been planning to do a marathon at some point, but I wasn’t planning for it to be this soon,” she said. “Col. Collins came up to me after Army and said ‘want to run a marathon in two weeks?’ It moved things up a little.”
Her longest run to that point had been 20 miles, and she admittedly had difficulties fueling. More of her last gel wound up on her leg than in her mouth.
“I was having a little trouble with my stomach, so I tried to take it a little at a time,” she said.
Kosgei emerged from Hains Point ready to make his move to catch Asfaw. Gutting into the lead with two 4:52 miles at 15 and 16, he was ready to take his shot.
“Our strategy was to win as a team, and we were going to do that by staying conservative early,” he said. “But we knew the fast guy would burn out, but we didn’t’ want to let him get too far ahead.”
Collins saw the race develop as he ran up Rock Creek Parkway as the leaders headed back south.
“I saw the leader so far ahead, but I was confident, I knew we were where we wanted to be,” he said. “They would catch him.”
Asfaw appears to have not finished the race.
A native of Uganda, Kosgei, 30, is stationed at Fort Riley in Junction City, Kan. where he is a medic. He has run the Twin Cities (where he set his 2:17:17 PR) and Houston marathons and ran track and cross country at Lamar University, where he was a two-time All-American.
“It’s a hard course, but a marathon is a marathon,” he said of Marine Corps. “If it’s flat you still feel it. My legs were heavy, the win was too much, but I knew I had to stay focused. The last mile wouldn’t kill me.”
He hopes to compete in the World Military Games in South Korea. In 2015.
Behind him, Army teammate Spc. Laban Sialo, 31, made his marathon debut, finishing second in 2:23:48. A medic stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, he was the 2012 indoor Division II champion in the 5k while at the University of Central Missouri.
“I wanted to get on the podium, so I could win a medal,” he said. “It’s a special thing to finish second in your first marathon.”
He focused his fall training on the Army Ten-Miler, and like Curran had not done specific marathon training, topping out at one 22-mile run.
“At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to walk again, but now I feel good,” he said.
Lindsay Wilkins, 36, matched her second place from her 2008 Marine Corps Marathon (2:49:06), and though she was a few minutes slower at 2:52:20, she felt it was a much better race for her. She lives in Arlington and ran track and cross country at the University of Richmond.
“In 2008 I lost by 11 seconds, so this was a lot better race,” she said. “A lot less frustrating, but it was hard at the end.”
She ran much of the race with intermittent training partner Erin Taylor, and the two moved up gradually throughout the race. The two were hoping to break 2:50, but like many runners, saw the wind blow those hopes away.
“I felt like someone was pulling me back the last four miles,” she said. “I know I said a few times, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me!’ There didn’t seem too many guys to tuck behind this year, so we were alone for a lot of it.
As was third-place woman Navy Lt. Gina Slaby, stationed in Virginia Beach, two weeks after running the Eindhoven Marathon in the Netherlands. The 33-year-old was last year’s runner up.
“It wasn’t where I wanted to be,” she said. “We got stuck in the middle of no-man’s land when the wind picked up.”
She ran with Kara Waters, of Great Falls, most of the race, and finished a second ahead of her, in 2:52:32. She’s headed to deployment in Djibouti, but is looking forward to racing a 100 miler in May or June, then the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Turner, PRed at his third Marine Corps Marathon, running 2:25:05. Not bad for a 35-year-old self-described “former obese smoker,” now stationed at Navy Base Coronado in San Diego.
“I just tried to stay patient, the leaders went out so fast. I sat back in 10th, but I knew people would start coming back to me,” he said. “They almost all did.
Arlington’s Mike Wardian was the first male master across the line, in fourth at 2:25:42 and Kristina Brendzel from Tampa led the 40+ women in 2:59:20 for eighth overall.

2013 Coverage
Shutdown Palace
Runners run, elected officials legislate and besides the dozens of honorary congressional chairman for the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile, never the twain shall meet.
