Six premier events in Loudoun County, Virginia, once again joined together in 2009 to continue the Loudoun County Race Series. The series began with the Van Metre 5-Mile Run for Children’s Hospital (March 28); continued through the spring and summer with the LAWS Run for the Shelter Half-Marathon & 5K (April 19); the Potomac River Running Twilight Festival 4-Miler (June 27); and the Harris Teeter YMCA Loudoun County Leesburg 10K & 20K (August 9); and concluded with two fall races – Stone Ridge 5K Race for Education (October 17) and the Freeze Your Gizzard 5K (November 21).
Awards were earned through participation and by accumulating points. The following is a listing of the winners in the race participation categories:
Series Participants (Participated in all 6 Races, earning a Commemorative short sleeve technical T-shirt, medal, and $10 gift certificate from Potomac River Running Store):
Men – Alan Riggs, Brian Kelly, Bruce Smith, Christopher Murray, Dale Nicholas, David Babington, Ed Ramirez, Jerome Schlafer, John Winkert, Paul Dufresne, Rob Meadows, Thomas Yearwood, Trevor Caskey.
Women – Ashley Jones, Debra Allen, Julie Yearwood, Lisa Kelly, Lisa Rini, Sharon Glees.
5 Race Participants (Participated in 5 of the 6 races, earning a Commemorative medal and $10 gift certificate from Potomac River Running Store):
Amanda Todd, Connie Jordan, Elizabeth Johns, Gardner Foster, Ian Coleman, Kevin Engle, Melanie Vollmer, Patrick Todd, Ryan Kula, Tim Balog.
4 Race Participants (Participated in 4 of the 6 races, earning a Commemorative medal):
Anibal Avalos, Anna Vandyke, Becky Makarita, Beth Nagel, Brian Boettger, Brian Szabos, Danielle Russell, Elizabeth Starr, Greg Goodlin, Holly Snyder, Jeff Ewing, Jonathan Hinkle, Justin Fritzius, Katherine Kula, Kelly Landers, Marcie Fuller, Michael Vega, Paul Hackley, Ronny Vandyke, Steven Cawi, Susie Barry, Tommy Welti.
The top 3 men and women points earners (minimum participation of 3 events) are listed below…with the winning male and female receiving a certificate for a free pair of shoes from Potomac River Running Store. Scores were determined by awarding points for a top 25 finish: 1st place received 10 points, 2nd place 9 points, and so on through 9th place, which received 2 points. Finishing places 10 through 25 received 1 point each. Winners are listed below:
Men: 1st (Justin Fritzius, 32 points from 4 races-Free Pair of Shoes), 2nd (Gurmessa Megerssa, 28 points from 3 races), 3rd(Steve Crane, 26 points from 3 races)
Women: 1st (Danielle Russell, 31 points from 4 races-Free Pair of Shoes), 2nd (Phebe Ko, 29 points from 3 races), 3rd (Elena Orlova, 29 points from 3 races)
Participation awards were distributed on-site in Leesburg after the Freeze Your Gizzard race in November. Remaining awards will be available at Potomac River Running Store’s Ashburn location through January 31, 2010. Any awards not picked up at that time will be sent via USPS. Please try to stop by if you can to help us save on postage. Please notify us if you would like to transfer your award to another Potomac River Running Store location which might be more convenient.
