Tacos at the track: a photographic retrospective

Dustin Renwick brought his morbid curiosity and his camera to a taco mile held Aug. 26 at Kenilworth Park.

Camilla Stone, 5 years old, led the way in the Family Taco Mile. Participants running in the Family or Fun heats ate one taco at the end of one mile.

Craig Stokes digs in for another bite. Racers in the Fast or Elite heats needed to consume a taco per lap on their four laps around the Kenilworth Recreation Center track.

Elsy Garcia proves she finished her taco so she could continue her race. Volunteers passed around tacos and checked for empty mouths to avoid choking hazards.

Nearly 400 people registered for the event. “When we started this, we hoped to get 100 people,” said race organizer Noelle Ellerson Ng.

Despite the warm temperatures, nobody puked. Spencer Boyd dropped one of his tacos on the ground but scooped it together to keep pace.

“I do not want another one,” Jill Maloney said as she grabbed the hand-off for her fourth and final lap.

District Taco delivered 675 tacos — steak and vegetarian. Pacers Running, DC Department of Parks and Recreation, Shake Shack, and November Project DC also partnered as event hosts.

Like many participants, Emma Cowan-Young dressed to match the theme. Her shirt read “I’m into fitness / Fit’ness taco in my mouth.” Other shirts spotted: “I know that guacamole is extra,” “You had me at tacos,” and “Tacocat spelled backward is Tacocat.”

“After watching everyone do it, I thought, this looks pretty cool,” said elite heat winner Andrea Keklak. She registered on site and then beat both Brian Brussel and Mike Wardian out of the final taco pit-stop on her way to an 8:21 finish.
