Roosevelt Island has reopened after 200 trees infected by the Emerald Ash Boarer were removed.

Three locals won five titles in distance events at the USATF Masters Track and Field Championships.

Men’s 800 meter run 90-94 1. Dixon Hemphill (92) 8:05.51

Men’s 1,500 meter run 90-94 1. Hemphill 21:14.35

Women’s 5,000 meter run 80-84 1. Tami Graf (81) 38:23.27

Women’s 10,000 meter run 1. Graf 1:29;09.00

Men’s 5,000 meter racewalk 1. Craig Chasse (47) 33:11.82

 

A federal appeals court ruling allows  Maryland to begin building the Purple Line, on Bethesda’s Georgetown Branch Trail, while a lawsuit opposing the project continues. The ruling allows the state to pursue federal funding for the project.

 

Chris Lear and South Lakes alumnus (and mile American record-holder) Alan Webb will speak about Lear’s book on Webb’s freshman year at the University of Michigan, Sub 4:00, at Pacers-Navy Yard Sunday at 5:30 p.m. East City Bookshop will have copies for sale and Modern Market will provide snacks. Seats are $10 and registration is here.

 

The D.C. Road Runners Club expanded onto the track last weekend, and added an elite 800 meter heat.

Race pacing for fun and fitness

A break from racing one of my favorite events gave me a chance to help other runners reach their time goals.

Kensington 8K Race

Three distances – 8K, 2M, and 1K – all starting and finishing at Kensington Town Hall.

The 8K runs through historic Kensington, going past Warner Mansion, along Antique Row, beside 120+ year-old houses and around Noyes Library, the oldest library
