- The D.C. area now has three residents who have achieved the qualifying standard for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials for the marathon. Arlington resident Chris Kwiatkowski ran 1:04:43 at the Philadelphia Half Marathon in November to break the 1:05:00 half marathon standard, and Washington, D.C. resident Teal Burrell ran 2:42:16 to break 2:43:00 at the California International Marathon Dec. 7. They join Falls Church’s Susanna Sullivan, who ran 1:14:31 at the Shamrock Half Marathon in March and Silver Spring’s Lindsay Flanagan, who ran 1:13:56 at the Big Sur Half Marathon in November, both of which achieved the “B standard.”
- A D.C.-area team racing series will debut in 2015.The Capital Cup will offer competitions for mens’ and women’s open and masters’ teams of seven runners each, fixed at the beginning of the year. Runners entered in the competition will be scored cross country-style at four races: the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile, We’ve Got Your Back 5k, Rockville Twilight Rotary RunFest and Parks 10k. The winning team at each race will earn one point, and the team with the most points at the end of the year earns a trophy and the leftover series entry fees after expenses ($50 per team).
