>>The Run! Geek! Run! 8k, formerly run at West Potomac Park, will now become a 5k run at Fairfax Corner. The MCRRC Piece of Cake 10k has added a 5k race.

>>The registration window has opened for the Marine Corps Marathon lottery until noon on March 15. Fast sellouts and a registration system overload led to the reintroduction of a lottery system.

>>The Washington Area Bicyclist Association and other organizations plan continue a campaign to have the Rock Creek Park Trail repaved. >>Chantilly alumnus and Stanford freshman Sean McGorty won the junior division at the USA Cross Country Championships Feb. 15 in Boulder, Colo. and the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association Junior Cross Country Championships Feb. 22 in Mt. Irvine, Tobago.

>>RoadRunner Sports is opening locations in Rockville, Md. and Sterling, Va. March 1.

Old news:

>>Serena Burla of Falls Church won the USATF Half Marathon Championships Jan. 19 in Houston, headlining the performances of four local runners at the race. Behind Burla’s 1:10:48 winning time, D.C. resident Beth Young finished 42nd in 1:17:18, one spot ahead of 2012 Navy Half Marathon champion Shannon Miller, now of New York.

Broadneck High School graduate Matt Llano, now of Flagstaff, Ariz., finished fifth in 1:01:44 and onetime University of Maryland athlete Tyler McCandless of Boulder, Colo. finished 17th in 1:03:25.

Race pacing for fun and fitness

A break from racing one of my favorite events gave me a chance to help other runners reach their time goals.

Eight local runners will compete in the Olympic Marathon Trials Saturday morning in Orlando.

Kensington 8K Race

Three distances – 8K, 2M, and 1K – all starting and finishing at Kensington Town Hall.

The 8K runs through historic Kensington, going past Warner Mansion, along Antique Row, beside 120+ year-old houses and around Noyes Library, the oldest library
