Jordan McDougal, 23, of Culpeper, VA wins by a mere half second ahead of Frank Devar, 22, of Washington, DC in the fastest road 5K of the year with 14:47.4.
Sunday morning 1700 running enthusiasts participated in the second annual Love the Run You’re With 5K, presented by Pacers Running Stores and Fitness Together.
Enjoying near perfect winter running temperatures, participants ran an out and back course along Army Navy Drive and South Joyce Street near The Shops at Pentagon Row. A Valentine’s Day inspired event, each runner chose their runner bib color based on their relationship status (red: in a relationship, green: single, yellow: well, it’s complicated) and more than 500 parings participated in the team competition.
With the top three finishers under 15:00, this event proved to be exciting with a near photo finish of winner Jordan McDougal (14:47.4) and Pacers Racing Team member Frank DeVar (14:47.9). Said DeVar, “It was a fight to the finish but Jordan edged me out in the last few steps. He’s a great competitor and I enjoyed racing against him.”
The story of the day was a surprise marriage proposal at the finish line by Gerardo Andres Calderon to his girlfriend, Grace Hannafin. Gerardo popped the question in the finish line chute after their 36:23 effort.
The post-race party sponsored by Champps Restaurant proved to be a hit with a popular karaoke contest, free drinks, and more than 150 awards distributed.
